The soprano-saxophonist Steve Lacy, deceased 2004, stood up time of his life for Thelonious Monk’s music, he over and over played Monk’s compositions and therefore accounts for the ongoing Monk-renaissance. Unfortunately this endangers his own music of losing more and more ground (to sink into oblivion). Yet Steve Lacy was not only a seminal jazz musician but also left a huge oeuvre. His compositions were called Ducks, Crust, Blinks, Stamps or something like that. Similar to the scant titles of this pieces his music composes also tessellate of little motives thus unfolding an irresistible charm.

Lacy Pool was born from the long time co-operation between the trombonist Christof Thewes (Saarbrücken) and the pianist Uwe Oberg (Wiesbaden). Together with the Berlin drummer Michael Griener the trio explores the diversity of styles in Lacy’s music.

.. Uwe Oberg, one of the hosts of the festival and for years already a central character in the cultural life of Wiesbaden has taken care of Steve Lacy’s music. Together with Christof Thewes and Michael Griener he plays short, often exquisitely subtle pieces, music that works like a hide-and seek, that doesn’t disclose its filigran beauty easily, but needs to be discovered. Of course Lacy offers also the opposite, the high spirits, but the way Oberg, Thewes and Griener play him, it is the affectionate scantiness that sticks. The Crust is one of those pieces, petite and gorgeous, that by the way is also suitable to belie for good the old myth of free jazz being academic music. Just listen carefully.

The Wiesbaden jazz pianist Uwe Oberg worked on several pieces, rearranged them for his trio. With different sonic modulators Thewes gives his trombone any tone colour you can think of. Griener has turned his drum set into some sort of grocery store where he produces not only impressive soli and veritable rhythms but also a multitude of sound patterns. With all freedom of interpretation Lacy’s works remained identifiable and the audience enjoyed the exciting arrangements of the three jazz musicians enthusiastically rendering homage to the great Lacy.

...Uwe Oberg (piano) and Christof Thewes (trombone) get to the bottom of Steve Lacy's music. Very energeticly, very exactly, with much feeling for the bulky expression of his music, that only exists with its opposite: its strength. There is quickly an immense field of tension in the room, here the motivic form, to which the music returns again and again, there the expansive, exploring approach. And finally Oberg and Thewes find some quite graceful, soft, almost weightless tones, you just have to listen closely....

Under the influence of the HOHE-UFER-concerts initiated by Guenter Christmann he became involved early on in the various forms of Jazztradition, Free Improvisation and New Music, which led to a longer collaboration with Christmann in his Vario-projects(a.o. C.I.M.-Festival Den Haag '90, Moers-Festival '92, Wittener Tage für Neue Kammermusik '93). He has worked frequently with dancers (a.o. Anzu Furukawa, David Zambrano), actors and poets (most recently in a project on Paul Celan with german writer Oskar Ansull) and teaches drums at the Musikhochschule Dresden.
